About The Artists…

Cathy Benton

Cathy Benton

Certified Professional Photographer, Photographic Craftsman

“With each subject that I have the privilege of photographing, I want to create a portrait that reflects the depth of their personality. Whether it is their shy, playfulness or the serious contemplative side, each portrait is created with the uniqueness of the individual at the heart of its inception.

Working with my associate artist, we are able to connect with the subject by engaging them in activity or conversation. It is amazing how responsive our subjects are when they realize we are truly interested in who they are not just what they look like.”
When Cathy first begins a portrait session her approach is to create and capture that one incredible image that would make a beautiful work of art to be displayed on the wall. However, in the process of looking for “the one” there are many others that make a perfect collection in an album or as gifts for family and friends.
Cathy L. Benton, CPP is one of only eleven photographers in the Tidewater area of Virginia to hold designated certification from Professional Photographers of America. Less than 3% of all photographers hold this distinction. A certified photographer has passed a comprehensive written examination and portfolio review to evaluate their artistic and technical expertise. A panel of top national and international judges reviews their work before this mark of excellence is awarded.
Cathy L. Benton is a nationally recognized photographic artist whose signature style is inspired by the “Old Masters Painters” but ultimately it is the personal interaction that reveals the artistry and beauty that is the final portrait. Her honest and timeless portraits reveal her talent for capturing the essence and beauty of her subjects. Although she works with people of all ages, she is best known for her portraits of children.
The Studio:
Located in the middle of Tidewater Virginia, the studio is convenient for most but often Cathy travels to other areas that provide just the right environment for the commissioned portrait. It may be a local, park, the beach, or the client’s home. A personal consultation in our studio is highly recommended. There we are able to begin the portrait design process by observing the subject and gathering important details that contribute to a satisfying experience. In the studio, portraits of all sizes and styles are displayed.
